On November 23, just before Thanksgiving, the 46-year-old actress married Dr. S. Robert Levine, who was 29, at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. The event was intimate, featuring only close friends and family.
For the occasion, Moore chose a peach-colored dress enhanced with vintage lace, making it distinctly hers. Their wedding cake played host to a quirky turkey topper, and one of her former colleagues, Valerie Harper, was a bridesmaid.
Moore and Levine first crossed paths in 1980, during a visit to Mount Sinai Hospital where Levine, a cardiologist, was treating Moore’s mother. Interestingly, he was unaware at the time that his patient had a famous daughter.
Reflecting on the wedding date, Levine mentioned, “It suited us. It was a bit unconventional, but it felt right. A time to express gratitude for our blessings.”
Their relationship flourished until Moore passed away in 2017 at the age of 80. Levine attributes their enduring partnership to one straightforward principle.
“It revolved around trusting our love for one another,” Levine explained. “We found mutual interests and recognized that while we each had our own paths, we also shared a life together, which helped us stay appreciative.”
Throughout Moore’s battles with health issues, Levine’s support remained unwavering. He emphasized how diabetes affected her quality of life, particularly the devastating loss of her vision, which prevented her from reading or dancing—activities she truly cherished.
Yet, even through hardship, Moore maintained her optimism, believing that research could eventually yield cures. “She tackled each day with determination and a smile,” Levine noted.
To honor Moore’s legacy, Levine has launched the Mary Tyler Moore Vision Initiative, aimed at driving research to preserve vision for those affected by diabetes. He stated, “The best tribute to her is working towards a future without diabetes-related vision loss.”
Levine fondly recalled their chance meeting, which turned into weekend dinner dates that sparked a deep connection—something he hadn’t anticipated at the start of his career in medicine.
“When we met, I never thought I’d end up in a relationship. But Moore warmed me with her sincerity, which broke down all my defenses,” he reflected.
On their wedding day, Levine couldn’t help but feel an unexpected joy. He described how Moore allowed him to be himself, fostering an environment of comfort and openness that defined their relationship.
Even after their wedding, they shared experiences that marked their lives, leading to a love story that has inspired many. Despite the challenges they faced, Levine’s commitment to keeping Moore’s spirit alive shines through in his ongoing efforts and fond memories.
“She made the world better,” he concluded, with a sense of nostalgia in his voice. “I miss her deeply.”
