Mary Weiss, Shangri-Las singer, dead at 75

Shangri-Las lead singer Mary Weiss died Friday in Palm Springs, California. She passed away at the age of 75.

Miriam Linna, founder of Weiss' Norton Records label, confirmed her death to The Associated Press.

The cause of the “Leader of the Pack” musician's death was not immediately known.

Weiss formed the band in 1963, at the age of 15, with his sister Betty and twin sisters Mary Ann and Marguerite Gunther, who were friends from school.

The New York natives released their debut single “Simon Says” in the same year, followed by “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” featuring Billy Joel on piano.

Shangri-La's, named after a Queens restaurant, reached the Billboard Top 5 in 1964 with this hit.

“Remember (Waling in the Sand)” was later covered by Aerosmith and resurfaced as a top song on TikTok among social media users.

Weiss' “Oh No” chorus is one of the most sampled songs on the platform.

The pioneering all-female group disbanded in 1968.
