Officials in Baltimore County, Maryland, helped a convicted illegal sex offender avoid deportation for several weeks by suspending his sentence and releasing him back into society, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials said.
Raul Calderon Interino, a 25-year-old Guatemalan national, Arrived Calderon Interino turned himself in as an Unaccompanied Alien Child (UAC) at the U.S.-Mexico border near Laredo, Texas in June 2014. Calderon Interino was subsequently served with a Notice to Appear (NTA) in federal immigration court at a later date.
Calderon Interano was transferred by the Office of Refugee Resettlement to an adult sponsor in Maryland in November 2014. The following year, in October 2015, a federal immigration judge ordered Calderon Interano deported from the United States after he failed to appear in court.
However, Calderon Interino was not deported, and in January 2023, Baltimore County police arrested him and charged him with sexual abuse of a minor, attempted sexual abuse of a minor, third-degree sexual offense, attempted third-degree sexual offense, and second-degree assault.
The day Calderon Interiano was charged, ICE agents filed a detention order against him, requesting he be held in custody with the option of being released from jail at any time.
In April 2024, the Baltimore County Circuit Court found Calderon-Interrano guilty of fourth-degree sexual contact and second-degree assault. He was sentenced to six years in prison, followed by five years of probation.
The judge suspended Calderon-Interrano’s prison sentence but ordered him to register as a sex offender. The Baltimore County Detention Center released Calderon-Interrano from prison rather than turning him over to ICE agents for deportation.
ICE agents arrested Calderon Interiano outside his Baltimore home on May 29. He is being held pending deportation.
