Local Reactions to Trump’s Potential Deployment of Troops in Baltimore
In Baltimore, Maryland, former CNN anchor Don Lemon spoke with residents on Friday, many of whom expressed a strong wish for President Donald Trump to send troops to help restore order.
Initially, Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser was concerned about Trump’s plan to deploy the National Guard and enhance surveillance of city police stations. Yet, she also recognized that the federal presence had a significant effect on one of the most dangerous cities in the US, citing an 87% reduction in carjackings as evidence.
Now, folks in various other cities are curious if a similar military intervention might address crime in their neighborhoods. Lemon conducted a series of street interviews in a tough area of Baltimore, asking residents how they felt about having the army in their community.
Public Opinion on National Guard Deployment
One older woman, a lifelong Maryland resident, shared her perspective: “I think it’s useful for some.” Her husband had been a victim of a fatal carjacking, and she expressed a desire for justice, saying, “I want justice.” When asked if she’d support sending in the National Guard, she replied affirmatively.
Another local, a male supporter of Trump, added, “That’s unruly, man! The murder rate is increasingly high, all drugs!”

He suggested that government programs weren’t effectively solving the roots of crime. “Send your troops to make everything straight, you know what I mean? I want to make Baltimore great again!” he stated, longing for a return to better times.
A Muslim man on his way to the mosque also weighed in, saying he thought sending in the troops could be beneficial, suggesting it might help clean up crime-infested neighborhoods. He termed the local crime situation as “heinous,” believing such measures would feel “like a breath of fresh air.”
Trump’s Stance on Crime in Baltimore
Trump has voiced his concerns about crime levels in Baltimore, calling the situation dire. “Chicago is the basement for now and Baltimore is the hole in hell right now,” he remarked at a press event. His view is that there’s an obligation to protect the country, including places like Baltimore.
