Mason Taylor: The Next Generation of Jets Tight Ends
Mason Taylor has a notable sports lineage. The rookie tight end for the Jets, picked in the second round this past spring, is related to two well-known figures in football: he’s the nephew of Zach Thomas, a former standout linebacker, and the son of Jason Taylor, a legendary pass rusher.
As expectations rise, Taylor is in a good position to potentially secure the starting tight end spot. Fortunately, he has a solid support system to help him navigate these pressures.
“My dad texted me to ‘stay where your feet are,’” Taylor mentioned after a recent practice. “We’re all about family, just tackling each day as it comes. Getting better each day is what matters. It’s about being present, not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.”
During his time at LSU last season, Taylor made a mark as a reliable pass catcher, amassing 55 receptions and two touchdowns for 546 yards as a junior. That said, his run-blocking skills needed enhancement to boost his draft stock.
Standing at 6 feet 5 inches and weighing 251 pounds, he certainly has the physical attributes to develop into an effective tight end, and his blocking skills are improving.
“I believe it all comes down to the basics—footwork, hand placement, pad level,” he advised. “I’m focused on getting better each day by learning from our tight ends and coaches, honing in on those fundamentals.”
Those small improvements can make a significant difference, he believes.
Looking ahead, it appears that Taylor is eager to embrace this new chapter in his career, while also being realistic about the journey that lies ahead.
In other news, head coach Aaron Glenn sees untapped potential in quarterback Blace. Now entering a crucial year of his rookie contract, he’s expected to grow in his role significantly.
“We can do so much with Blace,” Glenn commented. “We’re really going to expand his game. He’s versatile enough to run routes like a receiver, and I think he’ll pose a challenge for safeties and linebackers alike. I’m excited about what we can achieve this year.”
Meanwhile, Jermaine Johnson, who dealt with a torn Achilles last season, tweeted on July 25th that he has been “cleared.” Although he’s on the physically unable to perform list and hasn’t been on the field with his teammates yet, Glenn remains hopeful about Johnson’s return by week one.
