Massachusetts Gov. Healey Declines to Join Democrats’ ‘Resistance’ Group

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey (Democratic) is refusing to join a so-called “resistance” group formed by Democratic governors from other states to fight President-elect Donald Trump.

of union claims to be a bipartisan effort that brings together the forces of multiple governor's departments to “protect our democratic institutions at the state level.” Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker of Illinois and Jared Polis of Colorado launched the effort this week.

It also works with the Governors Action Alliance, another organization that clearly has influence in Massachusetts. Former governors Deval Patrick (D) and William Weld (R) both serve on the group's advisory board.

The group is expected to receive donations that Mr. Pritzker, the billionaire heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, describes as a “philanthropic effort.” It is unclear whether California Governor Gavin Newsom (Democrat), who has been described as the “leader of the resistance,” will participate.

But Healey made it clear that existing institutions, such as the state attorney general's office, exist to protect states' rights and powers. She also said she intends to represent all of the state's residents, including the 37 percent who voted for Trump.
