A Massachusetts Doctor Indicted on Multiple Charges
A doctor from Massachusetts, already facing numerous charges of rape and assault, has now been indicted on over 80 additional counts stemming from his practice as a rheumatologist and general practitioner at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.
District Attorney Kevin Hayden announced on Tuesday that a grand jury has charged Dr. Derrick Todd with 21 counts of rape, 59 counts of indecent assault and battery, and one count of assault with intent to commit rape.
This new indictment greatly expands Todd’s existing case, which already includes a long list of allegations across various locations, underscoring the seriousness of the alleged misconduct involving numerous patients over several years.
Prosecutors allege that Todd conducted unnecessary breast and pelvic examinations on patients during his tenure at both Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.
The supposed incidents took place between 2017 and 2023, affecting 22 victims aged 17 to 56.
In a news conference, Hayden remarked on the unusual nature of the indictments, noting the staggering number of charges and the many women involved. “It’s particularly disturbing because these women were violated by a medical professional, someone they believed they could trust,” he stated.
One of Todd’s lawyers, Ingrid Martin, commented that the defense has not yet received information about the new charges and is unable to provide further commentary at this moment.
Todd has previously pleaded not guilty to 22 charges related to rape, indecent assault, and assault in Middlesex County.
The additional charges from Suffolk County are distinct from the ongoing Middlesex County case.
Furthermore, Todd is embroiled in several ongoing medical malpractice lawsuits, with hundreds of former patients joining a class-action lawsuit in 2024.
Hayden emphasized the unprecedented nature of Todd’s case, stating, “The extent of the harm and the trauma these allegations have caused is unlike anything we’ve dealt with before.” He added that Todd’s arraignment on the new charges in Suffolk Superior Court is forthcoming.
The district attorney expressed appreciation for the victims who have come forward over the years to aid in the prosecution’s efforts. “We want every survivor to understand that we stand with you and will support you throughout this process,” he concluded.
