Massie raising funds after Trump criticism: 'I was threatened'

Representative Thomas Massey (R-KY) turned to social media on Tuesday to respond to President Trump, who labeled him a “political ancestor” in relation to the GOP’s tax and spending plans.

Massey expressed his concerns on Platform X, stating, “I need your help. Trump threatened this bill today, claiming it wouldn’t eliminate the Green New Deal but would substantially raise our deficits and debt. Can I use this link to contribute to my reelection?”

The post featured a clip of Trump speaking with a Capitol Hill reporter earlier that day.

Trump remarked, “I don’t think Thomas Massey understands the government. Honestly, I believe he should be voted out of his position.”

The White House has asserted that the GOP’s legislative agenda won’t add to the deficit, a claim Massey dismissed in a conversation with CNN’s Manu Raju, saying, “That’s a joke.”

He added that the settlement package is expected to increase the national debt by $20 trillion over the next decade, which is estimated to be $3.5 to $5 trillion more than the previous projections.

Trump made an uncommon visit to the Capitol on Tuesday, aiming to rally support from both moderates and hardliners for a significant bill that encompasses a vital portion of his domestic agenda.

This “Big, Beautiful Building” has faced various obstacles, as differing factions prioritize issues like state and local tax (SALT) deduction caps and cuts to Medicaid.

The bill now plans to raise the debt ceiling by $4 trillion, which could hold for about two and a half years. Treasury officials have cautioned about the risk of default concerning over $36 trillion in debt looming in the coming months.

Massey consistently opposes measures that would increase the deficit, even when proposed by his own party. He has previously countered Trump and surveillance policies yet has managed to secure reelection in his strongly Republican district.
