Massie threatens to oust Speaker Johnson if he doesn’t step down over foreign aid plan

A day after introducing a plan to pass foreign aid, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) faces a new motion to reverse the threat.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), during remarks during a closed session of House Republicans Tuesday morning, threatened to force a vote to remove the Speaker if she did not go ahead and leave.

“I asked him to resign… and he said he would not resign,” Massey told reporters after the meeting. “And I said, ‘The motion will be called, so you’re the one who’s going to get us into this, okay? The motion will be called.’

Massey went a step further, saying Johnson would lose more Republican support than the eight House Republicans who voted to expel former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last year.

Speaker Mike Johnson faces another motion to withdraw threat

“I will not resign,” a defiant Johnson said at his weekly press conference afterwards.

“In my opinion, it’s a ridiculous idea for someone to file a motion to vacate. We’re just here to do our job. It’s not helpful,” Johnson said. “It does not help House Republicans advance our policies that are in the best interest of the American people.”

Mr Massey is among the conservatives who have spoken out against Mr Johnson’s aid plans for Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, announced on Monday night, and has already faced a backlash from right-wing MPs over the lack of border security provisions. .
