Massive new sinkhole opens up on I-80 in New Jersey with all traffic now detoured

All lanes on New Jersey's Interstate 80 are being decoupled after a 15-by-15-foot sinkhole opened in the middle of the construction zone of the so-called “Swiss cheese” road, officials announced Wednesday.

The New Jersey Department of Transport has decoupled the west lane at 34 exits. x.

The sinkhole was opened to the median near where the builders worked to repair the existing hole on the eastbound side of the road that spanned the continent. News12 New Jersey reported.

The eastbound lane in Wharton, Morris County, has been closed for the past few months to repair roads. This is after the sinkhole has repeatedly appeared due to a “severe blank” that exists just below the surface near exit 24.

“The subway is basically Swiss cheese,” said William Cross, executive director of the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. PIX11 last month.

The crew is working to stabilize the area under the road by filling in holes, loose soil and small voids, while reconnaissing holes, loose soil and affected areas for even weaker spots.

Eastbound traffic on I-80 is currently being decoupled via route 10, route 46 and exit 34.

The I-80 ranges from Teenque, New Jersey to San Francisco, California to 2,900 miles.
