‘Massive shift’ in support for deportation of illegal aliens, says CNN pollster

CNN polling analyst Harry Enten documented A 'massive shift' in Americans' support for deporting illegal aliens over the past decade.

Enten announced that in four separate polls conducted last month, a majority of Americans said they supported deporting all immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, according to a New York Times poll. 55% support deportation, compared to 64% in the Marquette poll, 57% in the CBS News poll and 56% in the ABC News poll.

“The American people will give Donald Trump the benefit of the doubt.”

“So what we're essentially seeing here is that when asked this straightforward question that I believe captures the underlying sentiment, a majority of Americans actually believe that all immigrants here are “It's a very clear indication that they want to be deported. It's illegal,” Enten concluded. “There is no debate about these different numbers because they are all basically the same across four different polling organizations.”

He pointed to an ABC News poll showing support for deportation increased by 14 points, from 42% in 2015 to 56% in 2024.

“I think the American people will let Donald Trump do what he wants, at least if you believe these honest questions,” he added.

He went on to say that even Americans' attitudes toward legal immigration have changed dramatically since President Trump first took office. A Gallup poll question asking whether all immigration levels should be lowered went from just 36% agreement in 2016 to 41% in 2023 and 55% in 2024.

“This is the highest level since the aftermath of 9/11,” Enten said.
