Masters final round: Scottie Scheffler holds one-stroke lead, but many are waiting to pounce

A classic game awaits at Augusta National.

At the Masters, where low scores have been hard to come by, 12 golfers are within six strokes of the lead.

At one point, Scottie Scheffler led with two points. After just a few holes, he hit double bogeys on 10 and bogeys on 11, actually falling behind by two. He made a spectacular eagle on the 13th, the only hole of the third round, to once again take a share of the lead and make birdie par. He finished the round with a bogey and birdie, giving him a one-place lead.

Last year, he put Jon Rahm in a green jacket. The last time someone took the jacket back within three years was Bubba Watson in 2014. The left-hander won it in 2012, put it on Adam Scott the next year, and took it back from Scott the year after that.

Only three players topped 70 points on Saturday: Tony Finau, Chris Kirk and Collin Morikawa. However, his first two will require a miracle. Morikawa shot a 69 in the third round, putting him right in the go zone.

The two-time major champion started the day with three straight birdies, but had six bogeys, eight birdies and parred his final 10 holes. Still, he’s within range of his first green jacket.

Bryson DeChambeau fell into the water on the 15th and fell behind with a double-bogey 7, but he made up for the day by holing out from 77 yards on the 18th for a birdie. After finishing the opening round with a 65, he shot 73 and 75 in the final two rounds, and is now four strokes behind after leading the first round.

DeChambeau will join LIV in 2022, and this will be his first time playing 72 holes as a professional since last year’s British Open. Since he left the PGA Tour, he has completed 72 holes just five times.

Mr. Consistency on Saturday was Max Homa. He had just one bogey on the entire card, No. 12. It’s hard to imagine Scheffler or Morikawa dropping shots, so they’ll have to make a move if they want to win their first major.

And Ludvig Aberg will be making his major debut. Aberg was 4 under after 13 holes that day, but bogeyed the 14th and 15th holes to finish with a 2 under par 70. He’s definitely pushing himself on those things right now, as he’s now three shots behind the leader.

Saturday’s Moving Day lived up to its name, except for Scheffler and Morikawa, but there were times when four players were tied for the lead and seven players were within two strokes.

For now, it’s the Green Jackets that Scheffler loses. He was the pre-tournament favorite to win and is currently the live betting favorite to win.

Colin Morikawa

But considering the scores over the last two days weren’t that low, there’s definitely room for gains.
