Netflix’s New True Crime Documentary: Maternal Instinct
The true crime documentary “Maternal Instinct” has sparked quite a conversation lately. Directed by Jessica Dimock, it premiered on Netflix on June 12. The film delves into the harrowing 2020 murders of Regan Simmons Hancock and her newborn daughter, Blaxlyn Sage Hancock, at the hands of Taylor Parker.
In a recent article, DECIDER’s John Serba touted the documentary, calling it one of the most impactful true crime presentations available on Netflix.
Understanding Maternal Instinct and Taylor Parker
“Maternal Instinct” centers around Taylor Parker, who, after relocating to a small East Texas town in 2019, began dating a hog catcher named Wade Griffin. She convinced him she came from wealth and moved in with him just three months into their relationship. Parker later claimed she was pregnant, but—ironically—she had undergone a hysterectomy years before and could not conceive.
The paths of Parker and Simmons-Hancock crossed in September 2019 at a wedding photo shoot, leading to a close friendship. By October 2020, when Simmons-Hancock was 35 weeks pregnant, the two spent the day together. It wasn’t long before concerns arose: Simmons-Hancock’s mother reported her missing after she couldn’t be contacted. On October 9, 2020, authorities found Simmons-Hancock dead in her home, having suffered multiple stab wounds, while her child had been mutilated. Parker was apprehended later that same day, claiming she had just given birth, but she showed no signs of doing so at the hospital.
After being taken in, Parker eventually confessed to kidnapping the baby, leading to her arrest. By October 2022, she was convicted of capital murder and was sentenced to death the following month. Currently, she sits on Texas Death Row, awaiting execution.
Dimmock shared her motivations for the documentary, commenting on how people often misjudge danger. “We think we know what peril looks like, but it can come from unexpected places, even from someone who seems pleasant and harmless,” she remarked. “This changes our perception of how danger manifests and highlights the manipulative nature some individuals possess.”
Maternal Instinct vs. Stolen Baby: The Heidi Broussard Murder Case
Some viewers may draw parallels between “Maternal Instinct” and Lifetime’s film “Stolen Baby: The Heidi Broussard Murder Case,” which also streams on Netflix. While both pieces recount real incidents, they differ significantly in format; “Maternal Instinct” is a documentary, whereas “Stolen Baby” is a dramatization included in Lifetime’s “Ripped from the Headlines” series.
The story in “Stolen Baby” follows Heidi Broussard and Magen Fieramuska, who became friends while pregnant around the same time. However, Fieramuska’s pregnancy was a fabrication. On December 12, 2019, after dropping off her older child at school, Broussard and her newborn, Margot, went missing. She was later discovered deceased in Fieramuska’s car, while Margot was found alive in Fieramuska’s home.
In January 2023, Fieramuska agreed to a plea deal that reduced her charges. She is now serving a 55-year prison sentence.
Both “Maternal Instinct” and “Stolen Baby” are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
