Islanders’ Performance Under Mathieu Darche
The NHL season has gotten off to a good start for Mathieu Darche, as the Islanders headed into their Thanksgiving Eve matchup against the Bruins with a record of 13-8-2. Expectations for playoff contention are notably high, and the dynamics within the organization appear to be shifting under Darche’s leadership.
A significant factor contributing to this change is the general manager’s critical decision to draft Matthew Schaefer with the first overall pick. In addition, other offseason moves, such as involving Emil Heineman in the Noah Dobson trade, retaining coach Patrick Roy, and signing Jonathan Drouin, are proving advantageous so far.
“What I appreciate is that we’ve been building momentum from the start,” Darche mentioned before the game. “Our defense has shown considerable improvement lately, particularly on the road. You could see the changes since we adjusted our system earlier in the season. We did have our share of turnovers initially, but things are definitely looking better,” he remarked.
“I feel like we’re moving positively, and I’m really pleased with the atmosphere around the team. Patrick and the players have mentioned the joy in our game. There’s a real belief that we can win every match,” he added with an optimistic tone.
Darche and coach Roy, both from Quebec, didn’t have much prior connection until Darche took the initiative to meet Roy in Montreal during the offseason. This newfound synergy undoubtedly plays a role in the Islanders’ recent success.
Roy, who experienced frustration under the previous management of Lou Lamoriello, now has the freedom to implement his offensive strategy and create a coaching staff that aligns with his vision. Darche’s involvement in daily operations also has a significant impact; for instance, he notably benched Matthew Barzal after he missed a team bus to a rink last month.
Talking about their relationship, Darche said, “We’re constantly in touch. My communication with the players and the coach keeps us aligned on our playing style. We chat daily; sometimes I call even on my days off. I didn’t know Patrick well before this, but his passion is evident.” He also recalled some advice from his former boss, Julien BriseBois: “To be effective, you’ve got to align with your coach. It’s tough to work without that.”—and he feels they’re definitely synchronized.
Roy praised Darche, stating, “He’s been phenomenal. He knows himself and what needs to be done.”
Looking at traditional statistics, around 75% of teams that are in playoff contention by Thanksgiving typically make it to the postseason. The Islanders were assured of being above the cut line during the holiday, but with the Eastern Conference being exceptionally close this year—only a nine-point gap separating the leading Hurricanes from the last-place Maple Leafs—there’s a certain skepticism about the reliability of that old adage.
Darche noted this environment could affect how quickly any upcoming trades are finalized. Various Western Conference teams like Vancouver, Nashville, and Calgary are considered possible sellers, yet no team seems eager to make any moves this early.
“It’s tight everywhere,” he explained. “In most years, we’re typically in a better mathematical position around Thanksgiving or early December, but this season seems substantially tougher. It feels like the Eastern Conference has been like this for quite a while now—win a couple of games and you can leap into second place; lose some and you could drop to the bottom.” He concluded, suggesting that the current landscape is quieter than usual.
