Retired UFC fighter Matt Brown says former champion Ronda Rousey would be more loved by fans if she showed humility instead of making excuses.
Rousey has been touring and doing interviews for her book, “Our Fight,” and has received backlash from fans and the mixed martial arts media, who she claims have unfairly shunned her.
Rousey’s argument includes that she is the greatest fighter of all time and that she lost because of a severe concussion, but fans and MMA journalists have criticized her, pointing out that her UFC career was immediately followed by a stint in WWE.
Former UFC fighter and ex-boyfriend Brendan Schaub also disputed an account in Rousey’s book about her memory of a fight between Schaub and her now-husband, Travis Browne.
Rousey has repeatedly voiced feelings of being treated unfairly during her promotional stints. High Performance Speaking on the channel, Rousey again said she doesn’t understand why she isn’t loved by UFC fans after “giving it all” to them. [she] “It wasn’t enough”
The former fighter said he is hesitant to attend UFC events because he is afraid of being booed by the crowd.
“She alienates us. She alienates it from herself. I think all the fans want to love her.”
Matt Brown, who holds the second-most knockouts in UFC history as of this writing, said in MMA Fighting’s “Fighter vs. Writer“Podcast.”
“I mean, the first thing that goes through my mind is, what’s the problem? Like, is she complaining? What’s the problem? Maybe people said bad things about you. Welcome to being a human being. Welcome to being a celebrity. What did you expect?” Brown said on the podcast.
Brown said he understood Rousey was “bitter” and “unable to accept” the loss, but added that it was “always wrong” to push for external excuses.
“Even if you are injured, I can empathize because this has happened to me. I’ve been hurt in fights. I’ve been ‘sick’ too.”
“It’s just stupid to think that you’re special because you’ve had a concussion,” he continued. “You can look at a game you lost and list all the reasons why you lost, but when you say it, it’s an excuse. It’s a total excuse.”
The welterweight boxer added that he is sad because Rousey just needs to come to terms with herself and heal from the loss.
“I’ve lost. I’ve lost a lot more than Ronda. I’ve fought a lot more than Ronda. But I don’t want to live like that, blaming other people for my life and how I’m portrayed.”
Brown said Rousey “needs to have a little humility” and hire a publicist to coach her on what to say. Rousey has all the qualities of a likable person, but “nobody wants to hear the bullshit she says,” Brown said.
“She pushes us away. She pushes it away from herself. I think all the fans want to love her.” brown explained.
