Matt Damon’s Transformation for The Odyssey

In a recent episode of Amy Poehler’s podcast, Matt Damon opened up about his impressive physical changes while preparing for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, *The Odyssey*. He mentioned he decided to eliminate gluten from his diet, which he found to be significantly impacting his health. This change, he said, was life-altering.

Damon explained his commitment to this new lifestyle, describing it as a “complete lifestyle change.” He humorously noted this was part of “jacking into his 50s,” a nod to both aging and the rigorous adjustments he has made.

After cutting gluten, his weight dropped to 167 pounds, a significant reduction from his previous range of around 185 to 200 pounds. “It’s been a pretty drastic change,” he said, emphasizing that he felt much lighter. He also noted the challenge of adjusting his habits: “I’ve always thought about my plan, but this time, I just put my foot on the gas,” he remarked.

When asked whether he still craved gluten, he said, “Not really, not anymore.” This awareness about food sensitivities struck a chord with Poehler, who shared that many people of their generation weren’t as informed about such issues while growing up.

Damon also reflected on his love for foods he had to give up, like bread and pizza, revealing how much better he feels without them. “I’ve noticed a huge difference,” he sighed, slightly wistful but clearly relieved, “even if it means sacrificing some of my favorite treats.”

This isn’t the first time Damon has undergone a significant transformation for a role. He recalled his experience training for *Courage Under Fire*, where he lost a considerable amount of weight in a short span. Back then, however, it came with a stern warning from doctors about the potential impact on his heart, which made that journey particularly risky.

For *The Odyssey*, he has been working closely with a trainer to stay on track. Damon acknowledged that having a clear goal has been beneficial during his training sessions. The combination of a strict regimen and personal commitment seems to have paid off, and he appears both healthier and more energetic than ever.

As he prepares to embody the legendary Greek hero Odysseus, it’s clear that this role means much more than just a performance for Damon—it’s a testament to the lengths he’s willing to go for his craft.
