Matt Freese: The disastrous mistake during the World Cup

The USMNT faced a significant setback on Monday night as they lost 4-1 to Belgium in the Round of 16, largely due to a critical error by goaltender Matt Freeze.

At one point, the American team was ahead 2-1 and playing well, but then everything changed. Freese mismanaged the ball, resulting in an open-net goal that gave Belgium a 3-1 lead and shattered the team’s momentum.

“I’m obviously disappointed in my poor judgment,” Freese reflected. “The players in front of me did everything they could for a win, and I’m very proud of them.”

He expressed regret over how that moment unfolded, wishing things could have been different.

Early in the game, Freese had ventured out of the box to play the ball. However, he stumbled when he tried to kick it, and his second attempt only succeeded in hitting De Quetelaere and deflecting away.

The ball then found its way to Belgium’s Hans Vanaken, who easily scored, widening the gap to 3-1.

Freese mentioned that De Ketelaere’s close proximity made him anxious about potential contact, which led to what he called a “selfish decision.”

“I felt he was so close I thought he might kick my leg, so I tried to evade him,” he said.

This blunder reminded football fans of a similar mishap by kicker Younghoe Koo during the last NFL season, particularly his failed field goal attempt.

“This hurts,” said Freese, who plays for NYC FC in MLS. “This is probably the most painful moment of my life. But I understand it’s part of a long journey, and I believe great things will come from this federation and this team.”
