Gaetz resigned from the House of Representatives after President-elect Donald Trump nominated him to be attorney general in the incoming administration. Gaetz withdrew his candidacy less than two weeks after he was nominated, arguing that he was being “unfairly a hindrance” to Trump's transition team.
After stepping down, Gaetz admitted he would not return to serve in the 119th Congress, leaving his professional prospects up in the air.
“While momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation unfairly impeded the important work of the Trump-Vance transition,” Gaetz said. said “There is no time to waste on needlessly protracted Washington brawls. Therefore, I am withdrawing my name from consideration for attorney general,” he wrote in a post on X.
“President Trump's Justice Department must be staffed and ready from day one,” Gaetz continued. “I am committed to helping Donald J. Trump become the most successful president in history. I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice. I'm sure you will.”
President Trump then nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who has since been gaining support in the Senate ahead of her confirmation hearing.
After Gaetz withdrew, he admitted he had no intention of returning to Congress for the 119th Congress, leaving his professional prospects up in the air.
Gaetz resigned days before the Ethics Commission's long-awaited report was released. The report raises allegations of illegal drug use and sexual misconduct with minors, both of which he vehemently denies.
Even though Gaetz was no longer a member of Congress, the Ethics Committee continued to meet and discuss the release of the report.
House Democrats proposed a resolution to release the ethics report in early December, but it was quickly defeated by Republicans.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) also opposed the release of the ethics report.
“I don't think that's the right thing to do,” Johnson said. “It doesn't follow our rules and traditions, and there's a reason for that. It opens up Pandora's box, and I don't think that's healthy for the institution.”
