Matt Lauer’s Potential Media Comeback Sparks Discussion
This week, a report from People magazine hinted that former “Today” host Matt Lauer might be considering a return to the media world. It definitely brings back some memories.
According to an unnamed source speaking to the magazine, “He was talking to some people about it.” But, let’s be honest, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard rumors of Lauer’s comeback since he was let go in 2017 amid controversy.
For years now, supposed friends and acquaintances have shared similar claims. Reports emerged in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2023, suggesting things like, “More Humble Matt Lauer is considering a media return,” or even that he’s contemplating a “big TV interview” as a next step. It feels like a looping saga.
Interestingly, some speculate that Lauer might be behind these leaks, timed to coincide with the anniversary of his dismissal each year.
Another source connected to NBC noted, “He has enough money that he won’t have to work for the rest of his life,” adding that “no one will hire him. This story gets published once a year, on the anniversary of his firing. He… well, you can’t really bounce back from that.” It’s a tough spot to be in.
Lauer was dismissed from NBC after multiple allegations of sexual harassment and even rape surfaced. He referred to these accusations as “completely false,” yet he expressed regret during his departure, saying he felt deep sadness for the pain he caused.
The possibility of Lauer returning to media is uncertain, and it’s unclear who might be willing to give him that chance, unless he opts for an independent route like some other personalities have done.
Former CNN journalist Don Lemon had previously speculated Lauer’s comeback, suggesting that “the nation will miss him,” though others argue that his skills are more suited for classic morning TV and may not fit into today’s media landscape.
So, where does this leave Lauer? It seems like a mixed bag of opinions and uncertainty. Representatives for him did not respond to inquiries for comment.
