Matt Leinart discusses the importance of blood donations nationwide

Matt Leinart Partners with Abbott for Blood Donation Campaign

Matt Leinart has achieved quite a bit in his football journey. He was a two-time national champion at USC, snagged the Heisman Trophy, and became a first-round draft pick in the NFL.

Now, as a college football analyst on Fox Sports’ “Big Noon Kickoff,” he’s recently teamed up with Abbott to address the ongoing blood shortage in the U.S.

The “We Give Blood Drive” campaign resonates personally with Leinart. He shared with Fox News Digital, “My mother passed away from cancer years ago, and she needed blood transfusions.” He also mentioned a friend whose children are battling serious illnesses that rely on blood transfusions to survive. “They’re doing okay,” he added.

Leinart pointed out some concerning statistics, like how one in eighty-three new mothers require blood after giving birth. He reflected, “My wife recently had our third child. Thankfully, she didn’t need any, but you start to think—what if? It really hits home.”

He stressed the critical nature of blood donation, noting that some blood centers might only have a day’s supply on hand. “One donation can save up to three lives,” he emphasized, highlighting the significant impact of this initiative.

The campaign, in collaboration with Abbott, will challenge Big Ten Conference Schools to compete in blood donations during the season. The school that collects the most will receive $1 million to further student and community health efforts.

Kicking off on August 27th with “Give Us Blood Day,” the initiative will culminate in the Big Ten Championship Game on December 6th.
