Matt Martin's views on his role in the Islanders' front office

Matt Martin’s Transition to the Front Office

Throughout his playing career, Matt Martin has expressed interest in stepping into front office roles. So, when the Islanders offered him a position as a special assistant to GM Mathieu Darche, it felt like a natural step for him.

“Right now, I really want to learn everything I can,” Martin shared. “Darche mentioned he has the opportunity to take on various responsibilities. This week, I’m spending time with scouts during the draft. As a player, you often don’t think about these things; it’s a different perspective entirely.”

Even though he’s only just started, Martin hopes to get involved in all aspects of the Islanders’ operations. This includes working with Bridgeport’s AHL team as well as focusing on player development and evaluation.

In an ideal scenario, he envisions a long-term career in the front office that complements his playing days. “I spent a lot of time with Lou Lamoriello, and I’ve learned so much. In just my first week with Darche, I see he has a ton of innovative ideas. I’m excited to learn from him,” Martin added.

Speaking publicly since announcing his retirement as a player, Martin didn’t delve deeply into his past. He seemed more inclined to look forward than to reflect on his career. “To be honest, I found it more challenging to express my feelings during what turned out to be my final home game,” he said. “Right now, I’m focused on what’s ahead.”

He further noted, “[Darche] constantly emphasizes that he wants to hear my thoughts and wants to be challenged. Our relationship has been great so far; I genuinely enjoy being around him and look forward to learning more, just as I did with Lou.”

Draft Updates

In other news, Round 4 pick Thomas Poletin plans to join the WHL’s Kelowna Rockets for the upcoming season after being selected in the CHL Import Draft on Wednesday.

Furthermore, second-round pick Danil Prokholov was chosen by the Sarnia Sting of the OHL. “I believe he’s an excellent fit for the OHL,” commented Bridgeport manager Rocky Thompson regarding the 6-foot-6 Russian.
