Matt Petgrave Returns to Hockey After Tragedy

Matt Petgrave is back on the ice in England, participating in a hockey game months after the tragic incident that resulted in former NHL player Adam Johnson’s death.

As a defensive player, Petgrave is joining the Indy Fuel, the ECHL affiliate of the Blackhawks, after signing a standard player contract for this season. It seems fitting—perhaps even intended—that he finds himself in this role now.

Fuel CEO Sean Hallett commented on Petgrave’s return, acknowledging the heartbreaking accident that occurred two years ago, which led to the loss of another player’s life. “After a thorough review and discussions with his former coaches and teammates, I believe he deserves this chance to continue his career,” Hallett said, highlighting the fact that no criminal charges were filed against Petgrave following the accident.

Petgrave, now 33, was recently seen playing in a matchup between the Sheffield Steelers and the Nottingham Panthers in the Elite Ice Hockey League.

Johnson passed away from injuries sustained during the incident. At the time, the Panthers referred to it as an “abnormal accident.” Two weeks later, South Yorkshire police arrested Petgrave on suspicion of manslaughter but he was released on bail while the matter continued to be investigated.

In April, the Crown Prosecutor’s Office decided not to pursue charges against Petgrave.

Expressing gratitude for his new opportunity, Petgrave said, “I appreciate the Fuel organization and the city of Indianapolis for allowing me to continue doing what I love.” It’s quite a heartfelt statement, I think. There’s a mixture of relief and hope, perhaps.

During his time with Sheffield, Petgrave recorded an impressive 51 points in 61 games before making his way to play abroad, having previously shuffled between the AHL and ECHL.
