Matt Taibbi Discusses How Democrats’ Request For the Military To Disobey Trump Mirrors Russiagate

Taibbi Comments on Democrats’ Asserts Against Trump

On Wednesday, journalist Matt Taibbi drew parallels between recent Democratic calls for military and intelligence officials to defy the Trump administration and the early days of the Russiagate controversy.

Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan shared a video on X Tuesday, alongside five colleagues with military or intelligence backgrounds, urging personnel to “refuse unlawful orders.” Taibbi mentioned in a podcast that the video echoes the themes of Russiagate, suggesting it damages American credibility.

“This is propaganda that’s incredibly blatant and over-the-top,” Taibbi said. He pointed out that while it’s always been possible to refuse illegal orders, this kind of rhetoric has been absent from the Democratic discourse for decades. “So why now?” he asked, expressing confusion over the potential encouragement of civil disobedience. He noted that contemporary politics seems to be venturing into uncharted territory, leaving him unsure about the implications.

He further reflected on whether this situation transcends mere non-compliance, likening it to earlier instances of leaks during Russiagate that discouraged citizens from sharing information with the U.S. “It certainly painted Trump in a bad light, but it also made the country appear weak and divided,” he remarked. He questioned whether this was the intended message and expressed skepticism over that notion.

In January 2017, U.S. intelligence officials warned Israel that Trump’s ties to Russia might compromise national security, suggesting that information from the administration could potentially be leaked to Iran.

While Democrats have not pointed to any specific illegal directives from the Trump administration, their video appeared amidst backlash over U.S. military actions targeting drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean. Interestingly, they did not produce a similar critique of Biden’s administration, despite his authorization of missile strikes in Syria without Congressional approval.

Additionally, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin under Biden mandated that military personnel receive the coronavirus vaccine, leading to the discharge of over 8,000 service members who refused to comply.
