Matthew McConaughey Rarely Rewatches Old Movies

Matthew McConaughey recently shared his thoughts on watching old films during episodes of SiriusXM’s podcast hosted by Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson. He revealed that he doesn’t revisit his own work because it skews his judgment, calling himself a “poor judge.”

“Honestly, I’m not a fan of it. I mean, I love hearing my voice when I speak, but once it’s done, I just can’t,” he stated.

He humorously added that while working, he sees himself as “King Brando or King Olivier,” but when he watches his previous films, he becomes overly critical of himself. “It’s like, oh my god, who is this judgmental person?” he quipped.

McConaughey, who has been married to Camila Alves for nearly 14 years and has three kids, joked about being “really bored” with his wife, further connecting this to his film-watching habits. “It takes me four times to actually watch an old movie,” he explained.

The actor noted, “The first time, I’m fixated on my nose. The second time, I notice other actors around me; by the fourth, I can finally really see the film.” This, he thinks, emphasizes his struggle to engage with his own performances.

With an extensive career that took off in the ’90s with roles in films like ‘Dazed and Confused,’ he later starred in romantic comedies such as “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” His career underwent a transformation in the 2010s, with highlights including “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Mud,” and “Dallas Buyers Club,” which won an Oscar.

During the podcast, Harrelson, who starred alongside McConaughey in “True Detective,” mentioned that while McConaughey often embraced method acting, it sometimes frustrated him. “There were moments I just wanted to punch him in the face. I got so angry,” Harrelson admitted, offering a light-hearted look at their working relationship.
