Matthew Perry’s cause of death listed as ‘acute effects of ketamine’

Perry’s autopsy revealed traces of ketamine in his stomach contents. “The exact method of ingestion in Mr. Perry’s case is unknown,” the report said.

Other medical conditions that contributed to his death included “coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphrine,” according to the report. The autopsy also found “prescription medications and pills” in his home.

The autopsy report detailed that ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic with “established medical and surgical uses” and that Perry had reportedly been receiving “intravenous ketamine therapy to treat depression and anxiety.”

Although he had last received medical treatment more than a week before his death, the coroner determined that “ketamine has a half-life of less than three to four hours, so any ketamine remaining in his system at the time of his death was not from intravenous therapy.”

According to Lt. A “rapid medical evaluation” determined the man “was deceased prior to emergency responders arriving,” Scott said, adding that the circumstances were under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, which concluded its investigation in December.

The case was transferred to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery-Homicide Division, which is not unusual given the department’s high-profile cases.
