SALT LAKE CITY — Islanders Secure Thrilling Overtime Win
The Islanders saw their mini three-game winning streak come under threat, but they weren’t going to let it fade away quietly on Friday night.
Jonathan Drouin netted a crucial equalizer, and Matthew Schaefer sealed the deal with a goal just 2:06 into overtime, leading the Islanders to a 3-2 win over the Mammoths. This trip has been quite successful for them, with four wins overall and three of those coming in overtime.
They managed to tie the game with 6:16 to go when Drouin redirected the puck off his own body and then nudged it with his skates into the net. Initially, the goal was waved off, but after a review, it was determined that the puck had crossed the goal line thanks to Utah’s Nate Schmidt, allowing the goal to count.
The first period was frantic but the second period, well… it felt like a bit of a snooze. There was a brief moment of concern for rookie phenom Matthew Schaefer when he collided with Utah’s Kevin Stenlund just inside the blue line. He limped off but came back quickly, not missing any shifts. Still, midway through the third, he limped off again after blocking a shot but returned to the ice right after. Quite resilient, I guess!
Utah came out strong, dominating early and forcing Islanders’ backup goalie David Rittich to make ten saves in the first six minutes. Things were looking a bit concerning, but he held his ground.
As was the case in their previous game, the Islanders found themselves trailing before flipping the script to take a 1-0 lead. Tony DeAngelo launched a shot that found Emil Heineman, who expertly spun and fired past Utah’s goalie Karel Vejmerka with just 7:13 remaining in the period.
Utah thought they had an equalizer a few minutes later, only to have that goal called back after a league review confirmed it hit the crossbar instead of going in. Just over a minute later though, they managed to tie it up with a slick 2-on-1 play, reminiscent of some classic basketball duos.
Things got dicey for the Islanders when Schaefer was called for interference, giving Utah a power play. Dylan Gunther then unleashed a powerful one-timer from the left point, putting the Mammoths ahead for the first time.
Interestingly, despite being consistently outshot, the Islanders held a surprising record of 7-1-0 when their opponents had more shots on goal. They didn’t seem to mind playing the underdog role; perhaps it’s turning into a trend they can embrace.
