Matthew Sluka quits UNLV in middle of undefeated season

Matthew Sulka cashes in his chips and leaves Las Vegas.

The starting quarterback for unbeaten UNLV announced on social media Tuesday that he will not play any more games this season.

Sulka suggested his departure was due to NIL issues and said he plans to redshirt this season.

“My decision to enroll at UNLV was based on certain representations made to me that were not kept after I enrolled,” he wrote on Twitter. “Despite discussions, it has become apparent that these commitments will not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and the program continued success.”

Las Vegas reporter Paloma Villicana reported on Sulka: “I was asked to increase the transfer fee.”

The senior has completed 21 of 48 passes for 318 yards, six touchdowns and one interception for the Rebels (3-0) this season.

He also rushed 39 times for 286 yards and a touchdown.

In a 23-20 win over Kansas on Sept. 13, Sulka led the Rebels on an 18-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Kylin James scoring on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 1 minute, 51 seconds left.

Sulka ran for 113 yards in the game.

UNLV is scheduled to host Fresno State (3-1, 1-0) in its Mountain West Conference opener on Saturday.

The senior transfer spent the first four years of his collegiate career at Holy Cross, a Football Championship Subdivision program where he ranked first in career passing efficiency (147.4), second in career rushing yards (3,583), second in career rushing touchdowns (38), fifth in career passing yards (5,916) and fifth in career passing touchdowns (59).

He rushed for 330 yards, an NCAA Division I quarterback record, in a 2023 loss to Lafayette.

Haji Malik Williams and Cameron Friel are behind Sulka on the UNLV roster.
