Matthew Stafford’s Focus Shifts to Family After NFC Championship Loss
Matthew Stafford might be a leading contender for this year’s MVP, but the result of Sunday night’s game wasn’t what he or the Los Angeles Rams had anticipated. The Seattle Seahawks took the victory, securing their position as the NFC champions, while Stafford and his teammates faced a tough flight back to Los Angeles.
Regardless of the game’s outcome, Stafford’s primary concern remains his family. This was highlighted by his wife, Kelly Stafford, on social media. It wouldn’t be surprising if Stafford had lingering thoughts about the game, especially early Monday morning, but Kelly indicated that his responsibilities as a father would come first upon returning home.
She shared a video on Instagram showing him saying goodnight to their four daughters—twins Sawyer and Chandler, along with Hunter and Tyler—captured late at 2:30 a.m. The caption read, “At 2:30 a.m. with only a few left on the field, this was Matthew.” It’s a heartwarming reminder that no matter the struggles during the day, there’s joy in ensuring the kids get a good night’s sleep.
Stafford, 37, gave everything he had at Lumen Field, yet it ultimately wasn’t enough. A critical moment came on a fourth-and-4 near the Seahawks’ goal line, providing him a chance to lead the game with under five minutes left. However, when he attempted to pass to rookie tight end Terrence Ferguson, the throw fell incomplete as he faced tight coverage from Seattle’s Devon Witherspoon.
This key play allowed Sam Darnold and the Seahawks to take control, enabling them to secure a few first downs and run down the clock, leaving Stafford scrambling for a last-gasp attempt deep in his territory, which ultimately fell short.
As the Seahawks celebrated, the Rams left the field with disappointment, aiming for their first Super Bowl appearance since Stafford’s win in the 2021 season. He finished the game with a solid statistic line: 22-of-35 passes for 374 yards and three touchdowns, though it was noted that he finished the game with blood on his non-throwing hand.
In his 17th NFL season, Stafford had a commendable performance overall, concluding with a record of 12-5 while leading the league in both passing touchdowns and yards. As fans wonder whether he’ll pursue an 18th season with the Rams, Stafford chose to avoid questions about his future, showing a clear focus on heading home to his family.
In a sweet gesture, Stafford expressed gratitude towards his wife and daughters for their unwavering support throughout the season. He shared a note along with a gourmet donut, saying, “Thank you for being a rockstar to me all season! You all inspired a great year for Dad! Love you!”
