Hope for Change This Election Day

Election Day brings a chance to oust Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, with Republican candidate Maud Maron in the running.

Independent candidate Diana Florence, a seasoned prosecutor with 25 years of experience, has also voiced concerns about Bragg’s leniency toward repeat offenders and his failure to protect women from violent crime.

Yet, Maron—a former public defender and mother of four—seems to be the stronger choice to lead this critical office, which Bragg has made less effective during his time in office.

Her two decades as a public defender have offered her insights into the importance of holding criminals accountable while ensuring justice for victims, all while recognizing the potential pitfalls of prosecutorial power.

Since Bragg assumed office in January 2022, his conviction rates have fallen year after year—from 42% in 2021, which was Cy Vance’s last year, to just 35% in 2024. This is a notable drop from 2019, before the state’s anti-prosecution reforms took effect, when 64% of felonies ended in convictions.

It’s rather telling that Bragg quietly removed his office’s data dashboard during this election year, isn’t it?

Bragg is notorious for his first-day memo, where he instructed his team to avoid pursuing jail time for most cases, to downgrade serious felonies like armed robbery to misdemeanors, and even to stop prosecuting certain crimes entirely—focusing instead on leniency for offenders.

He does, however, prosecute some repeat offenders aggressively, while also targeting citizens who defend themselves against attackers. For instance, he took action against subway hero Daniel Perry, along with CVS worker Scotty Enoe and deli worker Jose Alba, charging them with manslaughter for their acts of self-defense against violent offenders.

The prospect of Zoran Mamdani, the leading candidate for mayor, sharing Bragg’s “non-military” approach is alarming. If both are in power, it could wreak havoc on the criminal justice system, adversely affecting businesses and everyday citizens alike.

Bragg’s misguided strategies, including seldom prosecuting shoplifters, pose significant harm.

No matter who wins the mayoral race, Bragg’s departure is essential.

He stands as a threat to public safety. Maud Maron could well be the solution we need.
