Tragic Shooting of Maui Police Officer
In a heartbreaking incident, a police officer in Maui was shot and killed on Friday while responding to reports of gunfire in an area adjacent to an old sugar mill. The officer, whose name has not been disclosed, was fatally wounded in Paia, located on Maui’s north coast, according to a statement from the Maui Police Department.
The suspect involved in the shooting has been apprehended. “The Maui Police Station is deeply saddened to confirm that one of the officers was fatally injured in a shooting incident early tonight,” the statement explained. It went on to convey the department’s grief, stating, “This is a tragic loss for our department and our community. We have not released any further details at this time as we respect the officers’ families and loved ones. We kindly ask the public for patience and support during this challenging time.”
Maui Police Chief John Perletier remarked on the situation, explaining that the officer was responding to reports of illegal shooting when he confronted a suspect believed to be firing a rifle. Perletier added that the officer had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and in return fire, the suspect was shot in the hip and is now in custody.
Perletier expressed his profound respect for the officers in the line of duty, calling them true heroes of the community. “It’s a tragic day for us,” he said. “This event won’t define us, but it’s a stark reminder of the risks they take daily.” He acknowledged the fear and uncertainty that such incidents bring, stating, “It’s something we hope never happens, yet we must be prepared. It’s absolutely frightening.”
