Pochettino’s Approach to Coaching the USMNT
In Philadelphia, there seems to be a noticeable aspect of Mauricio Pochettino’s tenure with the U.S. men’s national soccer team: the limited interactions he has with players outside of official events.
It’s, um, not much interaction at all, really.
USMNT defender Alex Freeman mentioned, “I think he’s going to allow me to stay focused on coaching during the season, which is great. If I ever need him, he’s just a text or call away. He really knows the club, so I imagine he understands its dynamics.”
Nonetheless, this doesn’t imply that Pochettino is neglecting to foster relationships with his players or that he isn’t actively preparing for the upcoming World Cup, which many consider a pivotal moment for U.S. soccer.
In fact, Pochettino and his coaching staff have been quite proactive, visiting over 50 clubs across North America and Europe to attend a range of games.
When Freeman joined the Gold Cup camp this summer, Pochettino took the time to pull him aside for a solid 20-minute discussion that provided valuable insights into his performance.
Freeman expressed, “It’s really beneficial to have someone give you feedback during camp. It boosts your confidence and pushes you to improve. He is genuinely passionate about the sport and wants the best from all of us.”
Interestingly, Pochettino admitted he wasn’t aware of Cristian Roldan until he made a last-minute decision to call him up a couple of months ago.
However, upon Roldan’s arrival at camp, a solid bond was quickly formed with the coach.
Roldan reflected, “That interaction really gave me confidence and made me feel like I actually belong here. I’ve been away from the national team for about two years, but I still believe I can impact the game. Embracing individuality has definitely contributed to our success, and he did a fantastic job of integrating me seamlessly.”
This connection was vital for Roldan’s return to the national setup.
“He directly communicated what he expects from me,” Roldan shared. “So it’s crucial to reciprocate that energy. Building trust is, for sure, the first step in this relationship.”
