Mavericks claim Stars are taking control of their shared arena in a legal dispute

Dispute Between Mavericks and Stars Escalates in Dallas

A notable conflict is brewing in Dallas as the Mavericks have taken legal action against their co-tenants, the Stars, at the American Airlines Center. This situation seems to arise from frustrations that have developed between the two teams.

The Mavericks assert that the Stars are violating their contract and hindering proposed upgrades to the arena. They even claimed that the Stars are effectively “holding American Airlines Center hostage.”

In response, the Stars have filed a countersuit, aiming to restore what they term “normal operations” at the venue and prevent any potential takeover attempts by the Mavericks, as stated by a representative from the Stars.

The Dallas Sports Group, which owns the Mavericks, remarked that after several unsuccessful attempts to engage the Stars in a dialogue about improvements and operations at the arena, they now feel compelled to rely on the legal system to affirm their lease rights and facilitate desired enhancements to the facility.

Underlying this tension is a growing rift due to differing visions for the future between the two franchises. Both teams currently share a lease at the arena that extends until 2031, but the Mavericks are exploring the possibility of constructing a standalone basketball arena.

Meanwhile, rumors suggest that the Stars are contemplating plans for a new venue, with reports indicating that a location in Plano, Texas, could be a strong contender.

Additionally, the Mavericks have accused the Stars of breaching a longstanding agreement which mandated that their base remain in Dallas, while the Stars currently operate out of Frisco.

City officials, including Dallas City Manager Kimberly Biser Tolbert, have expressed hopes that both teams will find a way to resolve their issues and continue to represent the city positively. “That would be the best outcome for both teams and the fans,” she commented.
