Mavericks co-owner Mark Cuban says he supported Trump in 2015 when ‘I didn’t think he had a chance’

Mark Cuban, a minority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has been a vocal opponent of former President Trump.

While Cuban has endorsed Trump’s past opponents, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, as well as his 2024 opponent, Kamala Harris, he has also blasted Trump with insults dating back to 2016.

But Cuban hasn’t always been a critic of Trump.

Cuban said he supported the former president when Trump first launched his presidential campaign in 2015. In an interview with X Wednesday’s Vivek Ramaswami, Cuban detailed how he initially supported Trump.

“In 2015, I thought, ‘He’s great. He’s not the typical Stepford candidate. And I thought that was a positive thing,'” Cuban said.

Cuban added that one of the biggest reasons he initially supported Trump was because he didn’t believe he could actually win the presidential election, and simply wanted to make a statement about the current state of American politics.

“A big reason was I didn’t think he had a chance. I just wanted to undermine traditional politics, and I don’t like that,” Cuban said.

Cuban became so infatuated with Trump in 2015 that the “Shark Tank” host even said in a July 2015 interview with Business Insider that he would consider being Trump’s running mate in the 2016 election. Earlier that month, Cuban praised Trump and his causes in a post on his social media app, Cyberdust, highlighting the fact that Trump does not come from a traditional political background.

“I don’t care what positions he actually takes,” Cuban wrote on the app, “I don’t care if he’s wrong. He says what he thinks. He gives honest answers, not prepared answers. That’s more important than anything any candidate has done in years.”

But times have changed: Cuban quickly retracted his support for Trump as the 2016 campaign progressed and has continued to disparage the former president ever since.

In his interview with Ramaswami, Cuban pointed to Trump’s ethics as the reason he has opposed Trump as president since 2016.

“He was unethical then and he’s unethical now,” Cuban said.

Cuban then pointed to Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election as an example of his own ethics.

Earlier this year, when Biden was still the presumptive Democratic nominee, Cuban went so far as to say he would vote for Biden over Trump even if Biden was “receiving his last rites.”

“If they hold his final wake and it’s him versus Trump and he gets his final rites, I would still vote for Joe Biden,” Cuban told Bloomberg News. March.
