Chicago hosted the NBA’s draft lottery on Monday night, and in a surprising turn of events, the Dallas Mavericks managed to secure the top selection, even with just 1.8% odds. This comes on the heels of the Dallas Wings winning the WNBA Draft Lottery last month.
One of the standout players from this year’s draft, Paige Bueckers, was the first to be selected. The former UConn basketball star expressed her astonishment at the Mavericks’ luck during the lottery.
“Honestly, I couldn’t believe it at first,” Bueckers shared. There’s a sense of fate here, I suppose. She mentioned, “I think God has a plan, so there’s a reason this happened.”
This year, Duke’s Cooper Flagg is widely regarded as the top prospect for the upcoming NBA Draft. Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets faced another disappointing season, finishing below the .500 mark with only 20 wins.
The Washington Wizards also had a rough season, failing to win more than 20 games, despite having secured the second overall pick in last year’s draft.
The odds for the NBA lottery have dramatically changed in recent years, leveling the playing field. Now, even teams that might not be in a strong position could end up with one of the top three selections.
