Mavericks part ways with Nico Harrison months after controversial Luka Doncic trade

The Dallas Mavericks made headlines on Tuesday by announcing the dismissal of general manager Nico Harrison.

In the interim, Michael Finley and Matt Ricciardi will step in as co-general managers while the team searches for a permanent replacement.

“This decision demonstrates our ongoing commitment to construct a championship-level organization that caters to our players, partners, and, most importantly, our fans,” stated Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont.

Harrison, aged 52, was instrumental in facilitating the remarkable trade that brought superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last season. Fans even chanted “Shoot Nico!” during a controversial trade involving fan-favorite Anthony Davis. He was a familiar face at home games.

Since he became general manager in June 2021, Harrison has led the team to a 182-157 record over four years. The Mavericks reached the NBA Finals during the 2023-2024 season but fell to the Boston Celtics.

Following the trade of Doncic last season, the Mavericks missed the playoffs, barely qualifying for the play-in tournament but ultimately losing. This marked the first time since the 2019-2020 season that a team missed the playoffs the year after making it to the Finals.

The Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery, selecting former Duke standout Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick. However, despite pairing Flagg with Davis, the team has struggled this season.

Currently, the Mavericks hold a 3-8 record, slightly ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans in the Western Conference standings. They recently lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, and fans grew increasingly loud in their calls for Harrison’s firing as a sizable lead slipped away.

In light of the team’s performance, head coach Jason Kidd was asked if the public outcry for a change in management was affecting player morale. He noted, “That’s the noise, so speaking for them, I think we just kept playing. We thought we had a chance to win again, but that’s for the players to respond to.”

Interestingly, the Mavericks’ first game under the new interim management will be against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night.
