Tampa – Max Freed lost his hitless for him before he lost it himself.
The left-hander ultimately achieved a great performance in the 7²/₃ innings that brought the Yankees to the Rays 4-0 win on Sunday afternoon at Stein Brenner Field, but appeared in the controversy due to a change in scores announced minutes before their first live hit.
Due to the eighth bottom where the fried food appears to be working on a no-hit bid in eight innings, official scorer Bill Matthews announced that Chandler Simpson was praised before his first hit from the Rays’ first hit.
At the bottom of the sixth, Simpson hit a ground ball from the first base where Paul Goldschmidt couldn’t field neatly.
The speedy Simpson could have beaten it on the line and fed it there, but Goldschmidt handled it – Freed beat him with similar plays in three innings – and the play first scored an error in Goldschmidt.
However, after reviewing the play multiple times, Matthews announced the change from error to hit midway through the eight innings.
The decision was controversial just minutes later when Jake Mangum led from the eighth bottom at center field from the line drive single.
Freed received a standing ovation after the Mangum hit, and the sold-out crowd of 10,046 confirmed it as the end of his no-hit bid instead of officially finishing on the sixth time.

Anyway, Fried put together yet another standout out that allowed the Yankees (14-8) to take three of the four out of the Rays (9-13) to bounce back from the overwhelming loss on Saturday.
Officially, Freed allowed only two hits, two walks and one batter while making two hits on 102 pitches.
The eighth change in score and Mangum’s hit could have made a difficult decision from the hands of the Yankees.
Bench coach Brad Orsk would have had to make that call as Aaron Boone was kicked out at the top of eight innings after claiming Judge Aaron’s third strike.
Before Freed lost a no-hitter, Jazz Chisholm Jr. played his role in keeping it in seven innings.
Fried, who successfully put his position on the field, flashed some speeds early in the game, snatching Simpson from the hit.
The rookie outfielder, who stole 104 bases of minors last season, hit a ground ball at Goldschmidt and ran down the line, but Fried beat him and received a flip for the outs.
After Oswald Cabrera made a second game error in four innings, this is a slow error following the first field error – Fried picked him up by picking up Morel on 2 bases.
The Yankees got a stronger defense from Trent Grisham, who led the game with a home run in five innings.
After Freed walked Danny Jansen one by one, Mangum hit a fly ball into the gap in the right center field where Grisham fell.
He then fired second at Nab Jansen, who was trying to tag him in the second, for a double play at the end of the inning.
