Video from Saturday’s third round of The Players Championship appears to show Max Homa hitting a shot over a fan’s head from near a tree on the 14th hole.
This is a frightening prospect because the person recording the video could have been close enough to Homa and the speed of the golf ball could have caused significant damage.
In fact, as Homa revealed, the 33-year-old man’s bullet hit a tree and no one was injured, but Homa admitted the near miss was “scary.”
“I was trying to beat that by a lot. Unfortunately, it was weird, but I gave some people a good talk,” Homa said. told Golf Digest on sunday. “I heard a lot of people laughing.”
Homa also cooperated with X to find out what happened.
“For your information, I didn’t hit anyone in the head yesterday on the 14th,” Homa said. I wrote it on Sunday. “It smoked wood. I’m really thankful we missed that guy. It would have been devastating. Great video, if I do say so myself.”
In response to a fan’s comment that he didn’t check to see if anyone nearby was okay, Homa said he didn’t check because the ball hit a tree.
“However, I would like to apologize to anyone who has been traumatized by the fear I had to endure,” he added.
A PFT commenter on Barstool said, “Max Homa admits to smoking wood on the golf course. He’s like a role model.”
“It’s natural that the ball was high considering my poor play,” Homa replied. “I should have taken a drug test before the round.”
Homa, whose last PGA Tour victory came at the Farmers Insurance Open in January 2023, shot a 2-over 74 on Saturday, putting him 20 strokes ahead of winner Scotty Scheffler, who was 1 under Sunday. He finished the Players Championship with even par.
Saturday’s shot has raised concerns about how close fans are to the potential trajectory of the golfer’s shot, which Homa addressed on Golf Digest.
“I asked them to step back. They took the normal three to four steps back,” Homa said. “I was trying to aim much higher than that, but at some point, all I can do is ask — [Saturday] Maybe he should have moved more, but I didn’t think he would use the knife. But usually if you ask him to move, it’s like taking him two steps back. I think they just throw caution to the wind sometimes for their own safety. I’m glad I didn’t hit anyone. ”
