Max Shabanov’s Skills Shine in Practice

Max Shabanov’s talent is clear after just a few minutes of watching him practice. The Russian winger has impressive skating abilities, control over defenders, and a diverse skill set that explains his success last season, where he netted 23 goals and 44 assists with Traktor Chelyabinsk.

However, it’s really his capability away from the puck that stands out. He needs to maintain strong defensive zone coverage, adapt to the physical demands of the NHL, and endure the rigors of an 82-game season.

Since arriving on Long Island, Shabanov has made strides in his English and has been frequently asking Coach Patrick Roy about defensive strategies. When questioned about his curiosity, he responded, “Because this is the way we win.”

Roy acknowledged, “You said, ‘Oh, I love this,’ and I love that he possesses the skills.” But it’s clear that translating those skills into his overall game will take some time.

Preseason games have highlighted this transition. Shabanov looked a bit out of sorts against the Devils and was shifted from the top line to the third line alongside Jean Gabriel Pageau and Simon Holmstrom.

For a player listed at just 5 feet 8 and 157 pounds, the physical side of the game is particularly challenging. Before a recent loss to the Rangers, Shabanov noted, “I can play physically.”

In goal, David Littic stopped 16 of 19 shots in his performance and expressed a desire to put any bad luck behind him, saying, “When it happens in the preseason rather than in the regular season, that’s better.” He seems hopeful that he’ll shake off any misfortunes.

During Monday’s game, only Anders Lee (upper body) was absent among NHL regulars, although he did skate without a no-contact jersey in the morning practices. Meanwhile, Casey Cizikas has been working as a left winger for Cal Ritchie at center, suggesting a potential lineup configuration should Ritchie secure a spot on the opening night roster.
