The Temple of Speed: Monza’s Racing Legacy
Known simply as Monza, this iconic track in motorsport circles is often referred to as the Temple of Speed.
On Saturday, Max Verstappen added to that legacy with a performance that resonated throughout Formula 1. The Red Bull driver, a four-time champion, achieved a remarkable lap time of 1:18.792 during qualifying, setting the fastest lap ever recorded at this legendary circuit. His impressive speed, around 164.47 miles per hour, marks a new qualifying record for the sport.
“That was good,” Verstappen remarked after his final push lap in Q3. “It’s always a challenge here; it’s easy to lose focus and make mistakes with braking and entry.”
He continued, “I think the final lap was solid. Securing pole position is significant, especially after the way last year went.”
When asked about his new record, Verstappen expressed appreciation for both the car and his adept driving skills, which helped break a previous record of 164.27 mph held by Lewis Hamilton from 2020.
“This generation of cars performs really well at high speeds. They’re fast on the straights. Sure, at slower speeds, we may lose some ground compared to earlier models. But on certain tracks, it seems like these lap records are within reach right now,” Verstappen noted.
Interestingly, he mentioned, “To be honest, crossing the finish line, I didn’t even think about it. But that’s good—it wasn’t a stressful experience. The car felt alright, though the new tarmac was a bit tricky.”
Still, Verstappen was cautious about predicting whether the RB21’s impressive pace would translate into a win on Sunday. “It’s hard to say,” he said. “Our race pace hasn’t always been up to par this season, so I hope we can achieve something tomorrow. Regardless, today has been a great day for us, but I expect it to be competitive.”
