The Chargers are set to be a focal point as the NFL offseason kicks off on Monday.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh has made significant changes, replacing both the offensive and defensive coordinators. On offense, he brought in former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, a notable talent in offensive strategy. Meanwhile, Chris O’Leary, who directed the defense at Western Michigan, steps in despite limited experience at this level.
Here are a few critical questions for the Chargers moving forward.
1. How will McDaniel maximize Justin Herbert’s potential?
After a disappointing end to the last season, Harbaugh made bold adjustments.
He let go of offensive coordinator Greg Roman because his game plan seemed predictable and too reliant on quarterback Justin Herbert’s skills. With McDaniel now on board, the hope is to better utilize Herbert’s capabilities while diversifying the offense.
In his first press conference, McDaniel expressed the need to optimize Herbert’s strengths. “Justin has a heap of talent,” he noted. “As coaches, we sometimes lean on that too heavily. There’s a way to achieve completions that probably all our quarterbacks can manage.”
He added that expecting extraordinary plays consistently can wear on players, and they aim to implement a more efficient, lower-pressure approach.
2. How will the defense adapt under O’Leary?
Following Jesse Minter’s move to the Ravens, Harbaugh quickly enlisted O’Leary as his replacement.
O’Leary, who was previously safeties coach, is familiar with the team’s dynamics and comes in to lead a solid defensive unit. Last season, Minter coached the Chargers to a top-five defense in terms of yards allowed and a league-best in points against.
The challenge now lies in preserving that success as O’Leary takes the reins.
3. Will Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater be ready for training camp?
The last season had high expectations until it was derailed by injuries. All-Pro left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a torn tendon, forcing rookie Joe Alt to step in as a right tackle and protect Herbert’s blindside. He performed admirably as the team started with three wins.
However, Alt then faced his own setbacks with ankle injuries, undergoing surgery afterward. The good news is that both are expected to be ready for training camp this summer.
4. How will the Chargers navigate free agency challenges?
The team’s trajectory in the upcoming season hinges on free agency, as several key players will be unrestricted free agents.
After a stint in Chicago, wide receiver Keenan Allen returned as a reliable target for Herbert, catching 81 passes and securing four touchdowns last season. On the defensive side, stars Khalil Mack and Odafe Oweh are also entering free agency. Oweh notably excelled during the playoffs with several significant plays.
While both players are priorities, Allen has expressed a desire to stay with the team, which plays into the Chargers’ plans moving forward.
5. What will the Chargers do with the 22nd pick in the draft?
To truly implement Harbaugh’s vision, strengthening the trenches will be essential.
Though Slater and Alt form a solid foundation for the offensive line, addressing competition for the center and guards remains crucial for Herbert’s success. While defensive lineman Teeair Tartt has bolstered the defense, enhancing the interior always remains a focal point.
Fans might want flashy new additions, but with emerging talents like tight end Orondo Gadsden and wide receiver Quentin Johnson, the Chargers already have significant offensive firepower.
Ultimately, winning the battle in the trenches is a top priority.
