Mayor Adams calls out opponent Mamdani for idealizing socialism

Adams Critiques Mamdani’s Socialism in New York Mayoral Race

New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed concerns on Tuesday regarding the public’s understanding of socialism. This came during a discussion where he was pitted against Zoran Mamdani, a democratic socialist and candidate in the mayoral election.

Adams remarked that “70% of New Yorkers don’t really grasp what socialism means,” elaborating that many people romanticize the term without comprehending its implications. He shared his own experiences from travels to countries like Cuba and Venezuela, mentioning, “I’ve seen empty shelves and the realities of socialist systems. It sounds appealing, but there’s always a cost to free offerings.”

He further criticized Mamdani for proposing initiatives like city-operated grocery stores, suggesting that such ideas could ultimately harm the very working class Mamdani claims to support.

In a more pointed critique, Adams questioned Mamdani’s vision, asking, “What about the Korean or Arab communities? Are we just opening stores for government-operated supermarkets?” His comments hint at a broader concern over the implications of Mamdani’s platform.

Mamdani recently won the Democratic primary, defeating notable figures including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has yet to withdraw his candidacy.

Adams, who initially ran as a Democrat, has opted to campaign as an independent. Mamdani’s unexpected rise has surprised many, given his advocacy for socialist principles and prior comments that evoked revolutionary sentiment. One noteworthy remark from his 2020 legislative campaign referenced the Communist Manifesto, stating, “each according to their capabilities.”

Moreover, Mamdani’s past statements have sparked debates about wealth and taxes, asserting that a city with so many billionaires should not have social inequality.
