Along with the new bins, owners of homes with units one through nine will have to switch to bins with secure latch lids starting Nov. 12, officials said.Number.

Officials say that if the rule goes into effect, 70 percent of New York City’s trash will be packed into containers.

“Many property owners already use trash cans for their garbage, paying over $100 retail to keep their streets clean,” Tisch said. “Now, we have great news: At the same time as we require all buildings with one to nine housing units to containerize their trash, we are announcing the official ‘NYC Trash Can’ – beautiful, durable, and under $50 for the most common size.”

Trash and recycling bins come in two sizes.

  • 35 gallons, $45.88
  • 45 gallons, $53.01

The city also said the price for a 21-gallon compost bin is $43.47, a price that includes shipping and handling, and is significantly less than comparable bins sold at retail stores, according to the city.

According to the city, the containers will help reduce rat populations, prevent black garbage bags from littering the streets and keep the city’s roads cleaner.

“Rats are getting bolder,” Rep. Adams (D-N.Y.) said of the rat problem. “They don’t run away anymore. They just hang out and do what they want. We really want to change that.”

By Nov. 12, 70 percent of the 14 billion pounds of trash New York City produces each year will be containerized.NumberThis came about after two years of work by city officials.

“Today we toss more black bags into the dustbin of history and mark another step in the ‘waste revolution,'” Adams said.

Starting June 1, buildings will be required to use official New York City trash cans.stBy 2026, it is planned to enable faster, safer and cleaner mechanised collection using rear-loading “tipper” waste trucks.
