The mayor acknowledged the country's challenges in immigration policy and suggested that President Trump pass legislation rather than threats.

Johnson said if President Trump is committed to transforming the United States, he will work with Congress to enact “sensible” legislation that would increase border control for border agents and judges during asylum cases. But Mr Johnson claimed instead the presidents had done the opposite and sought to cause chaos.

“He wants to create the structure of a system where there will be upheaval and chaos,” Johnson said, before turning to public education. “He wants to dismantle public education, an institution built by descendants of slaves, especially in the South. He is a threat to all that is decency.”

“No policy should be considered official unless it comes directly from President Trump,” Caroline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump-Vance transition team, told Fox News Digital.

“The American people re-elected President Trump by a wide margin and gave him a mandate to deliver on the promises he made during his campaign,” Levitt added. “He'll deliver.”

“If he wants to work with us, we'll have a partner,” Johnson said. “But if he wants to come and threaten us, he has… declared his opposition to us.”

Johnson's comments came a week after he claimed in a separate news conference that Trump is a threat to Black families.
