Mayor of Muslim-majority Michigan city endorses Trump

The mayor of a majority Muslim city in Michigan said he will support Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, calling the former commander in chief “the right choice for this critical moment.”

Mayor Amer Ghalib of the Detroit suburb of Hamtramck voiced his support for Trump in a Facebook post on Sunday, acknowledging that he and Trump “don't see eye to eye on everything” but saying he considers the former commander in chief a “man of principle.”

“I do not know whether he will win the election and become the 47th president of the United States, but I believe he is the right choice at this critical time,” Ghalib wrote in Arabic on his Facebook page. “Whatever the outcome, I do not regret my decision and am ready to face the consequences. For this and many other reasons, I express my support and endorsement to former and hopefully next US President Donald Trump.”

He added: “Now, let the caravan journey begin. This is just the beginning.”

Trump reposted Ghalib's message on his Truth Social account.

Ghalib's endorsement of Trump came after the two men met privately for 20 minutes in Flint earlier this week.

Ghalib told The Detroit News that Trump “knew a lot about me before the meeting.”

“We spoke about a variety of topics, including debates, poll updates, voting statistics for Michigan and Wayne County, concerns of Arab Americans, particularly Yemeni Americans, and we also discussed the situation in Yemen,” Gharib said.

Hamtramck is the only Muslim-governed city in the United States, and more than 40 percent of the city's population is foreign-born.
