Proposed Pay Increase for NYC Executives
The potential pay of Zoran Mamdani, along with other executives in New York City, could see a significant rise due to a proposed 16% salary increase that city council members are aiming to pass shortly, as per various reports.
A bill introduced by City Councilwoman Nantasha Williams (D-Queens) suggests raising councilors’ salaries from $148,500 to $172,500. If this bill is approved, it would also apply to the new mayor, public defender, auditor, and borough presidents.
As reported, Mamdani’s salary would increase from $258,000 to almost $300,000, which is quite a leap.
Interestingly, other officials, like auditors and borough presidents, would also see similar salary hikes. The bill was introduced this week and anticipates a public hearing before the year’s end, allowing the next City Council to fast-track a vote for January. The last time council members saw a raise was in 2016.
It’s worth noting that Mamdani had campaigned on a platform focused on affordability for everyday New Yorkers.
During his recent campaign for mayor, the 34-year-old candidate promised initiatives like free bus rides, a freeze on rents for certain apartments, universal childcare, and even a city-operated grocery store. There was also a proposal to gradually raise the minimum wage to $30 an hour by 2030, aiming to fund these changes by increasing taxes on the wealthy and large corporations.
Mamdani, who became a state legislator in 2022, previously voted for salary increases for state lawmakers as well.
As the pay increase plan was initially set to go to Mayor Eric Adams’ desk, that schedule has now been put on hold. Williams mentioned, “If we have a hearing on this bill this year, we don’t need a hearing on this bill next year. That’s been thought about in advance.”
When asked if Congress would endorse a wage increase in January, Williams commented, “That’s the goal.” The wage bill seems to place Mamdani in a challenging position regarding whether he would veto the bill or support something that might “make New York more affordable for the political class.”
