On Thursday, after visiting Hurricane Helen-ravaged North Carolina, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stopped by Nobu, an upscale sushi restaurant in Washington, D.C.
Mayorkas visited North Carolina and gave an update via satellite to the White House press briefing on Thursday afternoon, insisting the federal government was able to respond to relief efforts for both Hurricane Helen and Hurricane Milton.
“Resources needed to respond to Hurricane Helen will not be diverted to respond to Hurricane Milton,” Mayorkas said. “We have made it clear that we will be with all affected communities every step of the way.”

Search and rescue teams have so far rescued more than 4,300 people stranded or missing in the aftermath of Hurricane Helen in North Carolina, according to a Thursday update from DHS. Current figures show more than 220 people have been killed by Helen across the southeast.
Mayorkas announced via X that he arrived in the Tar Heel State around 10 a.m. Thursday.
Shortly after visiting storm-hit North Carolina, Secretary Mayorkas flew back to Washington, D.C., where a New York Post photographer captured the DHS secretary bringing home his dinner order.

Nobu is a global high-end sushi chain, and its Wagyu beef retails for $40 per ounce. The Washington, D.C. location is promoting a $200 per person chef's tasting menu called “Omakase.” Nobu is best known for his association with Japan's world-famous Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto.
Mayorkas has recently come under fire for going shoe shopping after Hurricane Helen made landfall before visiting the Tar Heel State.

In a separate post about X earlier Thursday, Mayorkas wrote: “I spoke to him this morning. @NC_Governor roy cooper @SenThomTillis and @SenTedBuddNC, And we reiterated our @DHSgov commitment. and federal support for North Carolinians as they recover and rebuild. We are there every step of the way. ”
