Mayorkas Must Explain Why He Freed Laken Riley’s Accused Killer

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee have asked Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas why an illegal alien accused of killing 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley was released into the United States. They are asking for an explanation by the end of next week. States with parole from the southern border.

On February 23, Jose Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela, kidnapped and murdered Laken Riley, a nursing student at Augusta University, who had gone for a morning jog around the University of Georgia campus in Athens the day before. He was arrested and charged with the crime. .

According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Ybarra arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border near El Paso, Texas, in September 2022 and was quickly released into the interior of the country by DHS.

Ybarra benefited from President Joe Biden’s extensive catch-and-release network. The network provides parole for border crossers to be released into the U.S. interior, where immigration hearing dates are years, or in some cases nearly a decade, away.

Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee said Mayorkas should ask “what urgent humanitarian reasons or important public interest justify the decision” to grant Ybarra parole and release him into the interior of the United States. He said he needed to explain.

Regarding the use of parole, You testified on November 8, 2023, “We make decisions on a case-by-case basis.” That must also apply to granting Ibarra parole. [Emphasis added]

We request you to show us your work. Submit a copy of Jose Antonio Ibarra’s case file no later than March 8.This includes records showing what urgent humanitarian reasons or important public interests justified the decision to grant him parole. [Emphasis added]

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), and Ted.・Senator Cruz (R-Texas), Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri), Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), and Thom Tillis (R-Louisiana). (R-NC) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) signed the letter.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA), and Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) also provided similar information about Ybarra and how he entered the United States. I’m looking for it.

Before heading to Athens, Ybarra was arrested in New York City on suspicion of causing injury to a child and violating motor vehicle regulations. Thanks to the city’s custody policy, Ybarra was released from jail instead of being turned over to ICE agents.

In October 2023, months before Riley was murdered, Ybarra arrested for shoplifting from a Walmart in Athens. Because he failed to appear in court, a bench warrant was issued in December 2023.
