McCarthy Criticizes Newsom Over Los Angeles Protests
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has spoken out against California Governor Gavin Newsom, addressing the protests in Los Angeles that led to an assault on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities.
“You really have to consider our governor’s role. He established a sanctuary state, and listening to the protesters, it seems their goals extend beyond immigration issues. It’s almost about wanting to bring California back to Mexico. Just look at the flags they’re waving,” he remarked.
McCarthy expressed confusion over Democratic positions, noting, “What’s happening here, with their approach to law and order, is troubling. Protesters are throwing fireballs at police and hurling bricks. It’s frankly embarrassing.”
In response, Newsom’s office criticized McCarthy, suggesting he was misrepresenting the situation. “The former Speaker seems to be misinformed. For starters, SB 54 was put in place before Newsom took office, which he should acknowledge,” the statement read.
It continued, “Additionally, our state laws align with federal regulations. McCarthy’s comments are disrespectful to the diverse communities he represents.”
Republicans, including McCarthy, have heavily criticized both Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for their handling of the protests, where demonstrators vandalized federal property and set vehicles ablaze.
In response to the unrest, the Trump administration approved the deployment of Marines and the National Guard to assist in maintaining order in Los Angeles, stating military presence was necessary for the protection of staff and buildings. However, Newsom and Bass expressed strong opposition, arguing that this could escalate tensions further. Marines were first sent to detain protesters in the city last Friday.
Newsom has defended his actions while engaging in public debates with Trump. Some Democrats believe Newsom, who is seen as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race, is correctly managing the backlash. “This is where Gavin thrives. He hasn’t hesitated to confront weaknesses directly. He’s quite adept at challenging Trump and the MAGA Republicans,” one supporter noted.
