Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) poured cold water on the possibility of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) being forced out of office, saying, “I don’t think that will ever happen.” Ta.
“That’s very good news, right? But this is what I think… it’s never going to happen,” McCarthy said Monday while speaking at the American Hospital Association’s annual membership meeting.
“We just have to try to inspire. I think we’ll just bring people in, but I don’t think that’s ever going to happen. I think it would be wise for Democrats to go along with that again.” “I don’t think it’s a thing,” he continued.
“Once you elect a chairperson, let him serve,” he added.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) filed a motion last month to remove Johnson from the speakership after she helped pass a spending package to avert a partial government shutdown. did.
The motion was the same maneuver used to fire Mr. McCarthy last October, shortly after he supported a 45-day budget extension deal in September to avert a government shutdown. The effort was led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), who cited the national debt and broken promises to House Republicans.
Greene has recently ramped up pressure on Johnson over his handling of government funds and his pledge to bring aid to Ukraine to a floor vote, arguing that the House should instead focus on the U.S. southern border.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has indicated he intends to bring the Ukraine aid to the Commons sometime after the Commons’ recent recess, although the issue could become difficult amid opposition from Conservatives.
It remains unclear what form the bill will take and how he intends to change the $95 billion Senate bill that would combine aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan with humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
Green and Johnson met last week but were unable to agree on these policy differences. The Georgia Republican said last week that he would not give Johnson a red line or ultimatum to force a vote on the evacuation motion, saying he wanted to be “sensitive” to his own conference.
He added that the meeting did not reveal when future plans would move forward.
