Mitch McConnell Provides Update on His Health
After nearly a month of being hospitalized, Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, has shared details about the events that caused his absence from the Senate.
In a detailed statement released on Sunday evening, McConnell explained that he experienced a fall related to his childhood battle with polio. He mentioned in an open letter to Kentuckians that he “temporarily lost consciousness” and developed “mild pneumonia” during his recovery.
“Doctors confirmed that I did not have any broken bones or a concussion,” he stated. “I didn’t have a heart attack or stroke. No tumors or bleeding, either,” he added.
Calls for Transparency on Health Issues
Although McConnell’s health seems to be improving, questions remain regarding his return to the Senate. He acknowledges the uncertainty surrounding his timeline.
“As frustrating as it is, this process takes time. Based on medical advice, I won’t be able to vote on the Senate floor just yet,” McConnell said. “Rest assured, I will not be absent from my important Senate work in the meantime.”
Reports indicate that McConnell had “several falls over the course of the year, thought to relate to his post-polio condition.”
Unconsciousness and Hospitalization
Last month, McConnell was found “unconscious” at home and subsequently admitted to the hospital. His condition remains somewhat unclear, though his doctor confirmed he sustained minor injuries from the fall.
“After a thorough examination, he was found to have no fractures or heart abnormalities. Early on in the hospital, he developed pneumonia, but he responded well to antibiotics,” the doctor explained.
This health update comes in the wake of the sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham, who had just returned from a trip to Ukraine. The absence of both senators leaves the Senate short of critical votes for key parts of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Speculation Surrounding McConnell’s Condition
Following weeks of mystery about McConnell’s hospitalization, many were left wondering why the longest-serving Senate Republican leader hadn’t been more forthcoming about his health. Online speculation surged, with some even suggesting he was in a vegetative state.
Adding to the intrigue was the leak of an audio recording from the emergency call on the day he was hospitalized, in which he appeared to be “unconscious” and potentially suffering a heart attack. Compounding this confusion was the fact that his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveled to China shortly after his hospitalization.
Chao’s office noted that the trip was planned in advance to support family philanthropic efforts and stated, “The senator’s health did not require her immediate return.” McConnell’s statement, while addressing his health, didn’t provide clarity on the numerous rumors circling his condition.
He emphasized his commitment to serving in the Senate, stating, “It’s reasonable to expect members to work diligently. I made the decision to retire at the end of my term next January to be transparent about the job’s demands. However, I still have work to do for you, and I plan to see it through.”
